Cohoba House is an impressive four-bedroom villa located within the desirable Belmont Estate on Tortola’s north-western coast. The property, set in beautifully tended terraced gardens, stands on an attractive hillside, and benefits from wonderful ocean views over the beaches at Long Bay and Smuggler’s Cove, as well as the outlying islands of Jost Van Dyke and Sandy Cay, among others.
This elegant house, which consists of three individual pavilions, is reached via a wide, sloping driveway. The main pavilion houses a living area with a cathedral-style ceiling and a number of imposingly high and heavy louvered wooden doors, which when open allow in even more light. The building has been ‘wired for sound’ throughout, and guests are able to enjoy music both inside the villa and in the outside spaces. Between the living room and the kitchen is an indoor BBQ area – quite unique, and beyond doubt a very useful and attractive feature of the house. The kitchen itself is equipped with all the appliances that even the most enthusiastic cook could possibly desire.
Next to the kitchen is a sophisticated formal dining room furnished with a heavy wooden circular table, with seating for up to eight guests in style and comfort. The room is decorated using original sculpture and a number of other artworks. To the rear of the dining room is an outdoor seating area with mature and attractive tropical plants in large ceramic containers. This area is perfect for guests seeking a little peace and quiet. A convenient cloakroom is located at the end of this pavilion, together with an exterior door that opens to the side of the property, and an outdoor shower for washing off sand when returning from the beach.
The king-sized master bedroom is reached via a staircase ascending from the end of the main pavilion. Beautifully equipped with dark wooden furniture and sumptuous linens, and decorated in calming colours throughout, the bedroom is a relaxing haven, with stunning ocean views. The en suite contemporary bathroom has twin washbasins and a sizeable walk-in shower stall, with a large window in the latter allowing still more ocean views. Two of the guest bedroom pavilions, again with king-sized beds, are located to the east of the main living pavilion. Both are luxuriously spacious but at the same time very private, and like the master bedroom have exquisite bathrooms and showers. The third bedroom, set a little further eastward, has private seating areas, one just outside the bedroom, the other adjacent but incorporated within the flora of the lush, green hillside surrounding the property. The fourth bedroom, with a queen-sized bed, is on the lower level of the main pavilion. This is a little less spacious than the other three, but furnished and decorated to an equally high standard. Next to this fourth bedroom is the laundry room with washer/dryer for guests’ use.
The outdoor space at Cohoba is idyllic, spanning nearly the entire width of the villa. There is a generously proportioned sparkling pool bordered by a large deck space. A very comfortable seating area is situated under the covered verandah, together with an impressive dining table easily seating up to eight guests. A large, cushioned daybed at the end of the verandah is the perfect spot for reading, relaxing, or simply taking a well-deserved nap.
